Why Ethiopia?
Ethiopia is located in the horn of East Africa and is bordered on the North and northeast by Eritrea, on the East by Djibouti and Somalia, on the south by Kenya, on the west and southwest by Sudan.
Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa where it has never been colonized. It is also the home of “Lucy” and “Selam”, one of our
oldest ancestors of over 3.5 million years ago.
Ethiopia has the second largest population in Africa at 110,000,000 people. 86% of the population lives in rural areas where they lack access to proper public health services and education facilities.
Ethiopia’s literacy rate is about 46% which is attributed to a very high percentage of parents not having an education. Many rural families are dependent on the labor of their children to survive and are often reluctant to send their children to school plus it is quite difficult for many families to cover school related expenses, books and uniforms due to their low daily income.
This is one of the main reasons the poverty problem remains constant mostly due to education standards along with available job opportunities in the rural areas which keeps Ethiopia from growing evenly to match the progress of other countries.
Help a Life’s Role:
Help a Life’s focus is on creating change and opportunities in Ethiopia for orphan girls as they learn through the Project Blue education program. Teaching orphan girls through an additional tutorial allows them to become a part of their society and a productive force for the growth and stability of an underdeveloped country.
